By: Pete Buteux

The different ways of approaching healthcare in today's society has become a topic of much interest. The readily available medical services often don't live up to people's expectations. Even it prescription drugs work they are often accompanied by negative side effect, so many are now looking for alternatives to medication. Consequently, many more people are using biofeedback to alleviate a variety of health concerns.

Biofeedback or neurofeedback as others call it, is commonly used to treat headaches, migraines and other chronic pain conditions but it has been proven to be effective in treating other health problems. Through biofeedback treatment, patients are given information about how their body operates and reacts to a variety of conditions. This feedback therapy will help the patient make the necessary changes in their life because they will be more in tune with their body.

Biofeedback therapy has proven to be extremely safe when used over a long period of time, even many years. Biofeedback can be very effective in conjunction with other relaxation techniques to combate stress, and can be helpful in reducing many illnesses and many medical conditions.

Numerous health issues, other than pain, can be treated with various stages of achievement using biofeedback therapists. Some of the other common conditions that have been effectively treated though neurofeedback treatments are epilepsy, attention deficit disorder , known as ADD, , hyperactivity and incontinence. These treatments are non-incasive so they are very successful in a rehabilitation setting after a stroke or even if someone is trying to eliminate an addiction such as drugs or alcohol.

Biofeedback therapy is a technique that uses mechanical feedback to teach people how to relax, even in stressful situations. Over time, many people are able to train themselves to control blood pressure, breathing, muscle tension and other bodily functions, through the use of painless electrodes that give on-the-spot feedback through graphs, beeps and flashing lights.

During a neurotherapy session, a biofeedback machine is used that monitors the patient's brain wave activity and displays the readings on a screen. A trained technican can assist a person in achieving the desired bodily responses by teaching relaxation techniques and showing the person how to observe these changes through a readout on the machine. With time and practice, a person can eventually learn how to achieve the desired changes, even without the use of the device to provide the feedback.

A patient will be able to start reading their own body signals as they become more aware of the way it responds to the environment using biofeedback techniques. Combined with practice the body can help increase awareness and sensitivity that allows the person to benefit from the neurofeedback therapy.

Some people think that biofeedback is a"magic cure" but there are other therapists that caution in the methodology. What it is effective at doing is providing a powerful set of tools to the subject that allows them to control and master their internal functions. This can eventually help the body heal and renew itself which is what it does best.
