Bringing Joy to Orphans and Seniors

By: Tony585 Tony585

Seniors, Kids, Celebrating Together

It’s not every day that young kids spend a day singing and celebrating with senior citizens. But that’s exactly what happened on May 11 at Asha Jeevan at Huli Mavu in Bangalore, a residence for older people, thanks to a project started by Nagendra K.S. Along with some of his friends, Nagendra arranged for vans to take orphaned children from Anatha Shishu Nivasa at Basvanagudi, also in Bangalore, to the old age residence for the day of celebration.

A wide variety of unique activities took place. The older people were very excited to see the children and greeted them with enthusiasm. There followed a number of different activities, including singing. Both children and adults sang a wide range of devotional songs, including one sung by a ten year old boy about his mother. The older adults also told stories to the children, relating their past experiences. There was a drawing session where kids and seniors alike had a chance to draw pictures for each other.

Finally, there was a great balloon popping ceremony. The kids and old people blew up hundreds of balloons of all shapes and sizes, and when a signal was given, they all popped the balloons at once, much to everyone’s delight. Cake and drinks and delicious desserts were served. Nagendra’s friends had collected some books that they presented to the manager of the orphanage for the benefit of all the children. Nagendra and his friends took the children back to the orphanage later that evening.

Nagendra created this project, which he title ULLASA, or joy, out of taking a personal seminar offered by Landmark Education which involves creating a community project. In the program, he saw that we wanted to be a source of happiness, innovation and leadership in the community. He decided to connect orphan kids and old age people so that both groups would benefit. The values and experience of senior citizens are not always tapped for the development of children. And these orphans didn’t have the opportunity to be with grandparents and are therefore deprived of the love, affection, values and experience that they could provide.

And senior citizens could find their hearts rejuvenated to be around the enthusiasm of children. Nagendra was committed to filling the gap in between these two communities and bringing an atmosphere of joy and connection to both of them.

The May 11 event was such a success that both kids and seniors are looking forward to the next event. Nagendra has spoken to 15 old age homes and 15 orphanages about making this a joyous project that lives on a larger scale.

On May 24, the daily newspaper Vijay Karnataka wrote a positive story about the event, appreciating the fun and joy it brought to the lives of old people and kids.
