Data Recovery from ReiserFS File System

ReiserFS is the latest version of Linux File Systems. It is a general purpose, journaled file system designed for Linux operating system. It was the first journaled file system that is included in the standard kernel. ReiserFS is the default file system in several Linux distributions such as Xandros, Elive, Yoper, GoboLinux, Linspire and Kurumin Linux.

The design purposes of ReiserFS file system were to improve the system performance over Ext2 and Ext3 file system, provide a space efficient file system, and to get better handling of large files and directories compared to existing file system. It uses balanced tree to store the files and folders and it also uses journaling.

ReiserFS stores file metadata, directory entries, Inode block lists and tails of the files in a single, joint B+ tree keyed by a common object ID. Disk blocks assigned to the tree nodes are “formatted internal blocks”. Other blocks are unformatted and contain file contents. This stores the file in a way that is easily accssible in less time.
