Data Storage and Deduplication

Data Storage and Deduplication
One of the expenses that companies cannot evade or escape is in the area of data storage. Every company today needs smart data storage solutions that would not cost them an arm and a leg! Along with the storage issues there are also security concerns. Even home based businesses should start thinking about their data storage options so that they do not end up in trouble at the last moment.
Many small and medium sized companies think that data storage and the related concerns are only for large companies. This is a totally wrong notion. As mentioned above even home based offices should start thinking about data storage options. In this technological era most people’s assets are in the form of past work which constitutes your system data. This data often will be reusable and still has value the future.
The data storage solution that you consider should take care of all aspects of data storage including backup, archiving, recovery and retrieval. Depending on the nature and the size of your business you can find a wide range of solutions. You can even find data storage solutions for $4000. However, such solutions will be able to handle only lower end requirements.
Allotting the right budget is one of the major concerns for companies that tussle with their data storage needs. The problem keeps growing as the volume of the data keeps increasing. When the volume of the data is too huge, the implementation too will become expensive, complicated and time consuming. So it is best to have your data storage solution in place right from the beginning or as early as possible, then you only need to keep upgrading the system to meet the increasing storage requirements.
Many companies go for standalone drives with automatic back up system. Standalone drives with automatic backup facility will be a complete data storage solution. However, this can only be handle mid range data storage requirements. This will not provide an adequate solution for large companies. Large companies have to look more in terms of data compliance and process control.
To minimize the size of the libraries required, large companies are advised to go for data deduplication. This process reduces the storage needs by clearing up the redundant data. Dedulication allows only one instance of the same data and any redundancy identified is handled by pointers that can call the unique data for the other redundant locations as and when required. As one can guess, data deduplication reduces the storage space required. Such a system makes way to efficient and fast data backup and retrieval. Data deduplication can be used at various levels it can be either at file level, block level or bit level. Among these bit duplication is the most effective method that increases the efficiency. Other terms that are used to refer data deduplication are capacity optimization and factoring.
If data storage solutions are implemented well in advance, you can save a lot of time and money. The implementation too will be lot easier. By setting up a reliable data storage system you also protect yourself from data loss that can occur due to system crash.
