What is Esmolol and for what Esmolol is used? Esmolol is in a class of drugs called beta-blockers. Beta-blockers work by affecting the response to some nerve impulses in certain parts of the body. As a result, they decrease the heart's need for blood and oxygen by reducing its workload. They also help the heart to beat more regularly. Esmolol is a fast acting beta-blocker and is only given by slow injection into the veins. It acts specifically on the receptors in the heart muscle and Esmolol is therefore known as a cardio-selective beta-blocker. Esmolol is used for temporary control of heart rate and blood pressure. Esmolol is indicated as a medicine for Supraventricular, tachycardia, peri operative tachycardia and hypertension. How to Take Esmolol Esmolol must be administered by a qualified healthcare provider. What are the Side Effects of Esmolol - Like all medicines, Esmolol can cause some side-effects. Some common side effects reported with this medicine include the following. Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects: * Hypotension, * dizziness, * headache, * confusion, * fatigue, * paresthesia, * asthenia, * depression, * anxiety, * anorexia, * Inflammation of the wall of a vein with a blood clot forming in the affected segment of vein (local thrombophlebitis) * Skin reactions such as rash and itch * bronchospasm Esmolol intraction with other drugs: No significant interaction of Esmolol with digoxin, warfarin and morphine. Warnings and precautions before taking Esmolol : * Remember do not stop using this Esmolol medicine suddenly without asking your doctor, or you may develop life-threatening heart problems. You may need to slowly decrease your dose before stopping it completely. * Use Esmolol with caution in pregnancy, nursing mothers, and in children. * Take special precaution and consult your doctor before taking Esmolol if you have Lactation, asthma, renal insufficiency, diabetes. * Talk with your physician or pharmacist if you are taking other medications. * Breast Feeding - Problems such as slow heartbeat, low blood pressure, and trouble in breathing have been reported in nursing babies. You may need urgent medical attention. What if Missed Dose of Esmolol? If you miss a dose of Esmolol medicine then contact your doctor if you miss a dose of Esmolol. Do not double doses. Storage Conditions for Esmolol: Store Esmolol at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep this medicine where young children cannot reach them such as a locked cupboard.
