Help for dental anxiety

By: JohnB

Anxiety or fear of the dentist is a problem that some of us are prone to and something that can be hard to cure. It's a fear that can stop people from seeing their dentist. We all know the best way to keep teeth healthy is by preventing dental decay before it has a chance to do serious damage but those that suffer from anxiety will find the simplest reason for not going to the dentist, which makes things worse. Though most would pretend not to be aware that regular visits to the dentist is recommended to maintain healthy teeth. When someone who suffers from dental anxiety eventually gets to a dentist it often results in lots of dentistry work being required to compensate for the time they missed previously.

There are approved techniques to get the better of your dental anxiety. For instance in the most serious instances it might be necessary to administer a sedative. Sedatives are given either by inhalation or by an intravenous feed to the arm, sedation will calm the nerves though you are normally awake and capable of answering questions.

Alternatively natural techniques can result in a similar outcome, hypnosis, acupuncture, controlled breathing are just some of the alternative methods you can try.

Dental anxiety might be the result of someone else's experience or something more personal that has resulted in a bad memory that can last indefinitely. Anything that leaves a bad memory might result in a fear that is out of proportion, dentists aren't bad people but an experience like that can make a patient feel that way.

You should ask of those you know and friends and family if they can suggest a compassionate dentist. I would recommend my own dentist as she understands my concerns and fears and though my hands still get clammy during even the smallest procedure I am at least at ease and trust her completely.

When you arrive for your first appointment you shouldn't hold back putting any concerns you might have, this can assist the dentists to put your mind to rest. Establishing trust is essential in the patient - dentist relationship, you as the patient will be seeing this person on a regular basis. If they aren't willing to discuss it with you or doesn't make much effort to overcome your fears, it would be advisable to find another dentist. It might also be worth bearing in mind that you are the patient and it is their duty to make you feel at ease. A dental practioner shouldn't make you feel intimidated, it is their function to make the experience as painless and pleasureable as possible.

You can always tell a successful dentist by the type of facilities they are able to provide, dentists who have lots of customers and up to date offices, have usually established themselves and their practice and proven they are indeed the best. A dentist with many customers has them for a reason and it would be safe to say that is because people are happy to use them and satisfied with the service offered.

So if dental anxiety is an issue for you firstly make the decision to be seen, find a dentist and make an appointment, if it helps have a friend come with you so they can help with support and ensure you get to the appointment. At the earliest opportunity let them know of your anxieties as it will affect the way they interact with you initially. Over time you will find that your fears become less of a concern as you establish the relationship with your dentist.

You can get over any fear you previously had, it wont necessarily be quick but eventually your anxieties will reside and before you know it you'll be visiting your dentist willingly.
