Some printer manufacturers sell their printers almost at a lost, hoping to make profits on the cartridges that you will have to buy to continue using the printer. Some printers, like HP Deskjet D2360 only sells for $49.99, while a set of black and color cartridges will set you back $29.99. That's more than half the price of the printer itself! Because of this, many people look toward ink jet refills as a way to save money. By comparison, a refill kits will cost $17.95 for black and $22.95 for color. While it does seem more expensive, the black kit offers 25 refills, while color offers 12 refills. Breaking it down, that's a little less than $0.72 per black refill and $1.90 per color refill. That surely beats the $29.99 price tag for original cartridges.
If the prices are so cheap, why doesn't everybody do it? There are several reasons, one of the most prominent parts being the mess. Refilling the cartridge involves injecting ink into the cartridge, which is by no means a clean and predictable operation. It is done using a syringe and a needle, which is inserted into a tiny hole in the cartridge. You have no way to know when it's full, so spills are rather common. In addition, if something does go wrong, the cartridge may print badly or not print at all. If you are adventurous, however, and the refill kits for your particular printer are not as expensive (they can be as cheap as $12.00 for a combo or $3.95 per color), refilling may be a way to save some of that hard-earned money.
Another reason that has many people panicked is the widespread belief that refilling the cartridge yourself, or using any non-original cartridges, for that matter, will void the warranty. For the most part, that's not true. According to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Improvement Act of 1975, the manufacturer cannot void the warranty just because you use refilled cartridges. However, if a refilled cartridge spills inside your printer, the manufacturer has every right to refuse to uphold its warranty agreement and there is nothing you can do about it. That said, if everything goes well, you should have no problems, but if the printer is damaged as a result of using a refilled cartridge, you will be responsible for any repair charges.
If you are still set on ink jet refills, there are many companies that will provide you with reasonably priced refills that will save you quite a bit of money. You will find instructions in the refill kit that will tell you how to go about the procedure. One last thing to note is that once you refill the cartridge, or attempt to, you may not be recycle it, which is an important consideration for some.
