Pulsing Tinnitus - What Actually Happens?

By: John K

Pulsating Tinnitus - What Causes It?

When you can hear a rhythmical throbbing sound in your ears in tune with your your heart beat that is probably pulsatile tinnitus. Not everybody will experience the same throbbing sounds. They almost certainly will describe the pulastile tinnitus sounds differently!

Pulsatile tinnitus results because of other underlying health conditions. Treatment is always available for pulsatile tinntus because you can treat the condition responsible for the pulsatile tinnitus.

Pulsating tinnitus is normally the result of a blockage of some sort in the arteries in the inner ear.

Blood flow can be influenced by a variety of factors including:

Localized faster blood flow in the body which occurs during strenuous exercise and can also be caused by severe anemia.

When the arteries become constricted with fatty cholesterol deposits, the flow of blood becomes erratic instead of the smooth journey it will normally take. This results in pulsatile tinnitus sounds in the ear.

Blood flow in a local area is increased where the artery is narrower than it should be. This forces the adjoining blood vessels to carry extra blood. The additional flow generates sounds and can result in Pulsatile tinnitus.

Potential Causes of Pulsatile Tinnitus Include:

Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) - Abnormal groups of blood vessels and veins that occur within the cranial cavity near the auditory nerve.

An abnormal connection between a large artery and venous pool within the cranial cavity; generally the result of severe blow to the head.

Chronic Inflammation or infection of the middle ear. Chronic inflammation is almost always accompanied by increase in the flow of blood to the inflamed tissue. Because this tissue is in the ear, some patients are able to hear the increased blood flow.

Middle ear fluid. The middle ear is generally an air-filled space. Pulsatile tinnitus will be heard if fuid is allowed to gather in the middle ear or if the Eustachian tubes are constricted.

Vascular tumors in the middle ear - commonly referred to as glomus (globe-shaped) tumors or paragangliomas. Surgery is required for correction of this problem.

When a patient is experiencing high cholesterol levels and has a partial constriction of the veins as a result of the possible obstructed blood flow, Pulsatile tinnitus occurs.

Pulsatile tinnitus treatments are related to it's specific cause. For example, hypertension can be treated with prescription medicines and blocked or narrowed arteries can be surgically fixed.

Treatment of pulsatile tinnitus normally involves a multi-faceted approach which can encompass a variety of symptom controlling approaches. Most sufferers with Pulsatile tinnitus are helped using conventional allopathic methods of tinnitus relief treatments including drug therapy, and relaxation therapy.
