Should I Purchase a Car GPS Navigation System?

Car GPS are becoming more and more popular with consumers. At first, it was just a luxury since only selected, high-end vehicles came standard with this option. Now, aftermarket navigation systems are also available due to its high demands. But how does it really work and is it advisable to purchase one?
GPS, or Global Positioning System, is actually a group of satellites that orbit the Earth. There are 27 satellites, but only 24 are active and the other 3 are extras in case one fails. These satellites send out signals which are then received by car GPS receivers, whose job is to locate at least 4 or more satellites in order to pinpoint where you are located. Once the GPS receiver knows your location, it is then overlaid with digital mapping and navigation information that is stored within your receiver, and even plan driving directions for you, as well as finds an alternate route around traffic congestions.
With the car GPS navigation system installed in your vehicle, you would feel pretty safe and confident since it guides you to drive in the right direction. You no longer have to worry about getting lost in an unfamiliar area, and drive around in circles trying to find your way back to the main road. It also plots what they call the POI, or point of interest, such as gas stations, hotels, restaurants, and even ATM’s. This way you would know if you have enough gas to get you to the closest gas station or find you the closest hotel to get some rest after a long day of driving.
But this is not all that it’s good for. Different features are now available with car GPS systems. This includes CD/DVD playback, MP3, Bluetooth connectivity, and even a 2-way internet connectivity which allows you to find a specific destination that is not listed on your POI. It’s as if you are practically buying an entertainment system for your car.
There are still other optional features that you can get with your car GPS system. Live traffic updates can save you the hassle of being stuck in congested roads and find an alternate route towards your destination. Its capability to remember where you parked your vehicle also will save you from getting lost in those massive parking lots where it almost seems impossible to find your car. The speech recognition feature allows you to control the unit as well as set your route, just by simply using voice commands. This comes in very handy especially if you are driving alone and do not want to get distracted by having to take your eyes off the road to program the navigation system.
So if you are still thinking about purchasing you GPS navigation system, do not forget to compare with other brands, and familiarize yourself with the optional features so that you will know exactly what you are looking for. There is nothing more frustrating than realizing you missed out on a feature after you had already purchased the unit.
