The Country Girl On Broadway - A Play You Should Not Miss On Broadway

By: Al Terry

The Country Girl on Broadway is back under the direction of Mike Nichols, an Academy Award Winner and eight-time Tony Award winner. The story of the play is a classic backstage story that enchanted audiences the very first time it appeared on Broadway in 1950. Back then it starred Uta Hagen, Paul Kelly and Steven Hill. The present Broadway version stars Morgan Freeman, Frances McDormand and Peter Gallagher.

The Story Of Frank

The Country Girl on Broadway tells the story of Georgie and Frank Elgin. Frank was once a known theater actor but is now down with luck and has also taken to drinking. Bernie Dodd, a renowned stage director, is keen on hiring Frank Elgin to replace his new musical’s lead actor whom he had fired one week into rehearsals. Phil Cook, the producer of the musical, is not keen on Frank but Bernie is able to convince Cook about Frank.

Frank gives an audition for the musical. Even though Phil is not impressed with Frank’s audition, he agrees to sign him to a contract for two weeks. Bernie goes to Frank’s house to deliver the good news and there he meets Frank’s wife, Georgie. Frank is not sure whether he can do the role. Georgie advises him to take up the role and to give it his best shot. Frank finally agrees. However, during rehearsals he has trouble concentrating and remembering his lines.

Trouble In Marriage

Bernie tries to help Frank out and asks him about his marriage. Frank confesses that all through his marriage he has been dominated by Georgie. He tells Bernie how Georgie started drinking after their son died accidentally. Georgie even tried to commit suicide. He tells Bernie that in order to give her a new purpose in life, he allowed her to become involved in his work. But pretty soon she started dominating him and this led him to take up drinking. How Frank tries to mislead Bernie about Georgie is one of the main highlights of The Country Girl on Broadway.

Bernie tells Georgie that she is not doing enough to encourage Frank. Meanwhile Frank tells Georgie that he is very nervous and is not comfortable with the quick costume changes and the understudy who lingers in the wings. Georgie lets Bernie know about Frank’s complaints; however, Bernie accuses Georgie of inventing problems and interfering in her husband’s career.

The Country Girl on Broadway story proceeds further. Frank is distraught after reading unfavorable reviews but does not show it to Bernie. Instead he starts drinking. Bernie again and again accuses Georgie of hurting Frank’s career. Later on when he realizes that it is not so, he confesses his love to Georgie. The play is about how Frank finally overcomes his insecurities with the help of Georgie. In the end Georgie stays on with Frank.
