The Imminent Evolution of Computer Games
If you were born in the late 1980's, chances are you remember the days of pixel graphics and poorly animated cut-screens. Just 10 years ago we were living in an age where PC games were barely even supported by the Windows operating system- now it's tough to find a Windows machine without at least one type of PC game on it. As we progress to newer technologies in virtual reality, perceptual realism, and bridge the gap to reality in video games- we can’t help but look back at the landmarks along the way that got us where we are today. The Progression of PC Game Peripherals Almost as soon as video games were created, innovative peripherals were created to provide realistic playing experiences for PC gamers. It all started with ideas such as the “Game Glove” or the much-loved gun peripheral for “Duck Hunt”- a popular Nintendo game in video game past. PC game peripherals have been lacking over the years, with precedence usually going to video game consoles The most common PC game peripherals include customized gamepads. These gamepads are geared to providing a better playing experience- providing only buttons needed to play specific games such as first person shooters or MMORPGs. Some ergonomic designs even cater to help fight carpal tunnel syndrome. Other PC game peripherals include steering wheels and joysticks for aerial and racing games. While these help simulate the experience of the real thing, actual virtual reality is still a decade or two away. PC Games and Graphical Landmarks In video game past, pixel art was popular for in-game graphics. Pixel art is the act of making stunning graphics just based on editing individual pixels in an image. This art dominated the 1990's graphics scene for popular PC games. In fact, a 3D look could be given on an actual 2D image, something we now call “2.5D.” But today, almost everything exists in a 3D realm. Models, characters, objects, and sprites are all created with complex 3D modeling programs. The result: incredible realism in PC games. But as time progresses, and processors can keep up with larger amounts of pixels, the gap between reality and virtual reality might just be bridged. Society Becomes Dependant Upon PC Games Video games are becoming quite pouplar among today's society. Some such as World of Warcraft are even pulling in over 5 million users each month in online game play. Clearly, PC games have become important to society as we know it. The only thing left to ponder is what PC games will be like in the future. PC Games and the Future It is somewhat frightening to think that the PC game industry has come so far in the past decade. But alas, it has, and we are now on the break of almost frightening technology. Products are now being tested that can actually react to patterns in brain activity- meaning you could one day control items in a video game from thought alone. Obviously, virtual reality is only another decade or two away. Furthermore, PC games are now starting to take advantage of holographic technology. Although currently the technology is far from being perfected, it is quite exciting to think that in another decade we might be able to react to virtual objects simply by touching them. It'll be interesting to see how video games pan out in the decades to come- given their already impressive track record of the past decade.
