The gift of flowers
Giving flowers is a great way to express what you can''t say with words. Whether you''re keen to treat a friend, surprise your mum or tell somebody special how much they mean to you, a bouquet really is the perfect present. Of course, anybody can send a bunch of flowers ? the key to turning a generic gift into a truly memorable one is to put a little thought into your choice. The most important thing is to know the tastes of your recipient. Have they let slip how much they love carnations or expressed a passion for roses? If so, they''ll be thrilled that you remembered their preference. You could also consider gauging their tastes by dropping the topic subtly into conversation. Of course, if you''re sending a bouquet to mark a blossoming romance then you might not have had a chance to discover the tastes of your recipient. In that case, it''s worth doing some research into what different flowers symbolise. Flowers have been used to express emotion and intention for centuries, but it was in Victorian times that the language of flowers or ''floriography'' really took off. Floriographers gave meaning to almost every bloom, ranging from passionate love to indiscretion and even neatness. Some of these meanings have seeped into modern consciousness; for example, lilies are still seen as symbols of purity and are therefore given at weddings and funerals, while red roses signify desire and erotic love. Whatever you want to say, there is sure to be a flower to express it. In addition to the tastes of the receiver and the meaning you want to convey, occasion is also important when it comes to choosing your bloom. Roses are a perfect choice for St Valentines, but on Mothering Sunday it''s better to send carnations. At Christmas, choose winter flora such as holly sprigs and mistletoe. If you really want to add a person touch to your bouquet, try giving it in an unusual or romantic way. Surprise a special someone by sending flowers directly to their work, or bring a floral gift with you to a date. If the occasion and the person are extra special, you could even consider decorating their bedroom with roses. Thanks to the advent of online ordering, giving the gift of flowers is a straightforward business. Simply choose your blooms over the net and arrange for next day delivery to the location of your choice. It''s never been easier to make somebody feel extra special.
