Tips For Refinishing Your Furniture
If you are someone like me who likes to keep his or her furniture looking fresh and brand new then chances are you've thought of buying a new set every now and then. Well, purchasing a new set of furniture can be quite costly but there are less expensive alternatives. You could have it refinished by a professional, or you can even do it yourself! The first step in refinishing your furniture would be to strip off the old finish. If you are going to use an opaque finish and the old finish is not blistered or peeling, then it's perfectly safe to skip this one but I would still recommend you do so. To do this, you have to spread newspapers on the area where you will be working on to prevent unwanted stains on the floor. Then apply a layer of paint remover and let it sit there for 10 minutes or so. After that, gently push the surface to check if the remover has set. If not, wait a few more minutes and try again. Once it has set, lay another coat and wait for another 10 minutes. After waiting for the second coat to set, remove the finish by making long scraping motions. For Home Elegance chairs or Home Elegance tables, use a scrub brush on the legs and a toothbrush for the corners. Use several more layer of paint remover to get everything off. Use a thinner and a scrub brush to take off the excess material produced by the finish and remover. You can apply the finish after the furniture is fully stripped. If you have wooden furniture like most Home Elegance furniture then you may want to stain the furniture. If you are going to stain the furniture, make sure to sand it first. Start with medium sandpaper for the initial scrubbings then end it with a fine one. Make sure to sand evenly on the surface. To complete this step, scrub the furniture one last time using steel wool. Make sure that you get rid of any unevenness and fill any gaps or gouges with wood putty. Sealing your table or chair will insure that the stain will apply evenly and will not soak into the dark areas where the wood is particularly porous. After you apply a coat of sealer and it is fully dry, scrub the furniture with steel wool again. Clean off the shavings with a brush for a smooth surface. Once you have picked a stain (use an oil chart for this step, hardware stores usually have these), apply it with long brush strokes. The stain will seep into the wood and will make the item darker and darker the longer it stays on. Once you are satisfied with the darkness of the furniture, wipe the stain off with cloth. Once the stain is dry (it should take at least a day) you are ready to varnish. Mix one part varnish with four parts paint thinner. Then by using a soft paint brush, apply the mixture to the item with even strokes. Let this layer sit overnight. In the morning take steel wool and buff your item. Add another varnish solution and let it dry. You can repeat the process several more times until you are satisfied with the new look on your furniture.
