Using Your Business Cards to Your Best Advantage

By: Kaitlyn Miller

So you have your new full color business cards and are ready to start handing them out, right? Unless you know how to best use those business cards, you have wasted your money. Simply passing out business cards is not enough. Your business cards are not going to do all of the work for you. You need to become an expert at networking with business cards.

First, think of creative places to use your business cards. Besides just passing them out to people you do business with, consider including them when you mail payments for your bills. As affordable as business card printing is, you need to be generous with the use of your cards. You have no way of knowing who is going to be opening your bill payment on the other end, and whether or not that person could use your services or knows someone who could. Avoid putting business cards in personal letters or cards, though, as this can look tacky.

Always give out your business card, even if you happen to meet someone by chance. Your family and friends need to receive business cards as well. They need to have a way to tell others about your business and its services. Take business cards everywhere you go. Are you taking your child to the library to do some research for a school paper? Take some business cards. You might strike up a conversation with another parent that opens an opportunity for you to give out your business card.

Of course, you do not want to become obnoxious about passing out your business cards. You need to use proper etiquette when you do pass them out to other people. Always start by asking them if they have a business card. If you get one from them, make a note on it about where you met them before putting it in your pocket. This will make a good impression on the person, making it more likely that they will call on you in the future for your services.

Another way to avoid the appearance of being pushy when passing out your business card is to use it as a chance to ask for a referral. Instead of saying, “Here’s my business card, give me a call,” you can say, “Here’s my card. I would appreciate it if you would pass it along to someone who could use my services.” This takes the pressure off of the person you are talking to but still gives you a chance to do some networking with your full color business cards.

Finally, never force your card on someone who does not want it. Be proactive when talking to people about your business, and look for opportunities to pass out your card, but do not simply hand it to everyone you meet without warning. This can actually hurt your chances of making a successful business contact.

As you can see, simply having business cards is not enough. A business card can do nothing in and of itself. You need to know how to use them politely and effectively to best promote your business.
