Who is a Candidate to Be Affected by Panic Disorder?

By: Roberto Bell

When a person walking through the forest has a sudden close encounter with a poisonous snake or any other wild animal, their normal respond would be to scream and to run away from the beast as quickly as possible.

When these identical feelings of fear and horror occur with no logical reasons and when they occur in a completely safe environment (while walking on the beach or watching a movie at the local cinema) you do not have to be an expert to conclude that something is not right with your health. Experiencing more than one of such episodes in a short period of time (a few days or weeks) might be an indication that the person has developed panic disorder.

At the very early stages the sufferers become extremely scared and confused. The non psychological signs of panic disorder which can include palpitations, nausea, shortness of breath, dizziness, excessive sweating, jelly legs etc. make the victim to ensure themselves that something completely different is happening inside their bodies. Victims usually ask for help at the wrong places. They visit a whole range of various medical practitioners undergoing numerous checks and tests because they are sure that the problem is with their heart, lungs, blood pressure and so on. The mental health expert is usually last on their list to visit.

While going through the panic attack patients could believe that they have some kind of the uncurable illness, they are going to die on the spot, going crazy or to lose their mind. Panic attack might occur every time when the sufferers find themselves in a particular environment or it can just strike without a clear cause regardless of the circumstances. A big number of individuals suffering from panic disorder sometimes develop agoraphobia (fright of wide-open or crowded surroundings from which in a case of panic attack would be difficult to escape or to seek and receive help.)

Panic attacks can even strike during the sleep. Hot weather also has an affect on panic disorder because sufferers experience more panic attacks during the warm summer months. The main reasons for this are that warm weather accelerates pulse, induces dizziness and dehydration. Also, during these months people are more likely to spend their time outdoors and therefore have a much higher possibility of running into unacquainted and unpleasant situations and surroundings.

Although the real causes of panic disorder are unknown, some studies have shown that certain groups of people are more likely to develop this condition than the rest. This group includes people who are timid by nature and whose tendency is to be worried and over concerned about every aspect of their lives. They constantly question their own abilities and are always unsure whether they are good enough to finish their tasks and responsibilities. The signs of their instability and fears are often noticeable from their early childhood (blushing, palm sweating, palpitations, not feeling comfortable in front of older, unfamiliar people or in front of the authoritative figures.) Those kids spend a lot of time daydreaming and imagining things and show no agonistic spirit and behavior. While sleeping they might also experience nightmares and have accidents with bed wetting. Their perception of other persons is somewhat naive because they cannot observe the hidden intentions of mean people. Even after repetitive and numerous disappointments they do not modify their act.

It is important to remember that panic disorder is very common mental health problem in our society. Although persons who show some of the previously mentioned symptoms in their childhood have a higher chance of being affected by panic disorder in their mature years, not everyone will. On the contrary, some very confident people who are easygoing and have no obvious difficulties in their lives may be hit by this disorder with no warnings or a valid explanation.
