Why is My Waterbed burping

By: Douglas Boston

Have you ever been sleeping on a waterbed only to hear a very interesting sound? Many people pass this sound off as something in the room, or something they made up while dosing off to dreamland. However, this sound may be something more than your subconscious playing tricks on you, or your noisy neighbor. When you hear this sound, it may be time for you to burp your waterbed. In order to burp your waterbed it is very simple. Simply sit on your waterbed and gently tap the top of the bed until the pressure is released. And then you wake up from your dream, and realize that this isn’t how you burp your waterbed.

Actually, waterbeds are known for getting occasional air bubbles on top of the water. While this is a regular occurrence, it can happen ever so often, and when it does happen it can actually ruin the quality of sleep you will experience. This is because it disturbs the sensation of floating on top of water, and can create uncomfortable positions. But don’t worry, getting the air out of your waterbed is very simple, and will usually only take several minutes. How you know you have an air bubble in your waterbed is very simple, for one, you will probably hear it, and two you will definitely feel it.

What you will want to do is gather a few simple household items to relieve your waterbed from this air pressure. The two items you will need is a broom and a towel. After you have located the air bubble, open the valve on your mattress, and lay the towel over it. The reason why you want to put the towel over the valve is because water may leak out during this process and you don’t want to get your floor wet. Next, take the broom and begin beating your waterbed until the air bubble is release. Just kidding, you will not want to beat your waterbed under any circumstances. You will want to go to the head of your mattress and lay your broom down on top of the mattress. Very gently begin to push the air bubble towards the filler valve, and by doing so, you will release any air from your mattress. If you haven’t noticed any air bubbles in your waterbed, you may want to check for them when you add your yearly conditioner. This is a great way to ensure there was no air buildup in your mattress. But how exactly does air get in your waterbed? No, it doesn’t mean that you have a hole in your mattress; it simply means that nature is taking its course. Water is made of air (remember H2O?), and sometimes air can accumulate within the water. When this happens, you simply have to push the air out of the mattress.
